Whether it's the elegance of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or the effortless appeal of Françoise Hardy on the streets of 1960s Paris, we have all witnessed the charm of the trench coat at some point in our cultural conscience. Originally designed as hard-wearing military attire, it was introduced during the First World War to offer protection against the elements – and maintain the sartorial standards of the British Army. Though our world – and wardrobes – have moved on since then, little has changed in the purpose of this perennial piece.
‘The trench coat is such a classic piece that will always be relevant’, explains COS’ Design Director, Karin Gustafsson. ‘At COS, we’re always looking for ways we can reimagine the familiar with new proportions, details and more sustainably sourced materials to make these icons even more relevant for the modern wardrobe.’

The single-breasted twill trench
Timeless design, beautifully crafted.
Let’s start with the classic. Crafted from lightweight, structured cotton-twill, this design has all the hallmarks of the traditional trench: a concealed front fastening, a pointed collar, a functional storm flap, and a fabric-covered tie belt.

The double-breasted wool trench
Modern, minimal and effortless.
The long double-breasted trench is as close to the original military version as they come. Beautifully crafted from a fine wool blend, it comes in a rich navy shade and features a classic front gun flap, storm flap and shoulder epaulettes that nod to its heritage.

The cropped day trench
A between-season hero.
Equal parts jacket and coat, this piece is designed to sit at the waist, but its weighty cotton fabric will keep you warm if temperatures do decide to drop. Cut for a regular fit, it has slightly wider raglan sleeves with an adjustable tab fastening to allow room for movement and layering underneath.

Meet the statement style of the season: the double-breasted trench, reimagined in soft cotton-corduroy in a rich shade of brown.
