The denim round up

This season, COS have launched their best denim collection yet, featuring new shapes, washes and more sustainably sourced fabrics. Here, design director, Karin Gustafsson talks us through the key denim designs.

There are many parts denim can play in the modern wardrobe. There’s daily denim – the trusty go-to you can’t help but wear again and again. There are the weekend ones, that can be dressed up or down with ease. Or the pair that are stored safely away until the time comes to unveil them in all their freshly dyed glory. The list goes on. But one thing’s for certain, when you find the perfect pair, it has the potential to be your wardrobe’s best friend for life.

These days, there’s more to shopping for denim than simply the look and feel. With the exposure of the environmental impact of producing denim, the fashion community is also seeking more sustainably made designs that will stand the test of time. ‘Everything we buy should be an investment,’ explains COS design director, Karin Gustafsson. ‘The best thing about denim is that the more you wear it, the better it gets.’

‘Everything we buy should be an investment to keep. The more you wear denim, the better it gets.’

There’s a sense that the demand on denim has never been greater in the COS atelier this season. In their new collection, they have introduced a selection of new shapes, washes and fits, whilst using more sustainable fabrics including organic and recycled cotton. ‘Here at COS, we design our denim based around three key principles,’ Karin explains. ‘The perfect fit, sustainable design and lasting quality.’

With their new collection set to cover all your denim needs, we caught up with Karin to tell us more about the pieces that will define your wardrobe this season (and beyond).

The wide-leg jeans

‘One of the most important things to think about when buying denim is how the fit will make you feel. It should make you feel good. And these loose-fitting jeans will definitely do that! They sit high on the hip and have a full leg length. They can be dressed up or pared back for a more comfortable look and feel. For me, they’re the perfect wardrobe staple.’

The midi skirt

‘An undisputed wardrobe classic, that is here to stay. Our denim skirt is based on a 5-pocket jean design, making it easy to style with everything in your wardrobe. We also use more sustainably sourced fabrics to create this piece. It’s made from a blend of organic cotton and recycled cotton. Even the lining is made using a mix of recycled polyester and organic cotton.’

‘At COS, we design our denim based around three key principles: the perfect fit, sustainable design and lasting quality.’

The tapered full-length jeans

‘Our most-loved denim shape is back with more to love this season. Previously, we have only offered this with an ankle leg length, but now we’ve introduced a full length fit too. It also comes in two new washes. The first is a vintage-inspired light blue and the other is a beautiful shade of off-white.’

The square-neck top

‘Inspired by traditional artist’s apparel, our new smock top is a versatile piece that works equally well as part of a full denim look as it does mixed with other shades of denim. Crafted with comfort in mind, it’s made from a blend of soft organic cotton and TENCEL™ lyocell to give it an extra drapey feel.’
